Culture in the Zaanbocht

Wormerveer and Wormer, part of the Zaan region in North Holland, have a rich cultural history and a diverse contemporary cultural scene. Two notable venues that contribute to Wormerveer’s cultural life are the Wormerveerse Vermaning and the Jungle.

The Wormerveer Admonition

The Wormerveerse Vermaning is a historic Mennonite church.
The Vermaning was built in 1831 in the Neoclassical style.
The building
is a symbol of the region’s liberal traditions.

Today, the Vermaning serves as a cultural center. It hosts concerts, lectures, and art exhibitions that attract a wide range of visitors. Its serene atmosphere and historic setting make it an ideal location for reflection and experiencing art.

A completely different but equally fascinating spot in Wormerveer is the Jungle, a unique urban park and gathering place located behind the Wormerveer train station. The Jungle Wormerveer is a truly creative project where sustainability, nature, and culture come together.

The Jungle Wormerveer

It originated as an old warehouse and industrial site, but has since been transformed into a green oasis featuring gardens, animals, and artistic elements.

The Jungle hosts a variety of cultural activities, such as art workshops, theater performances, and music shows. It is a place where creativity and community take center stage. Visitors can enjoy a relaxed and inspiring atmosphere in a green setting while engaging with art and culture in all its forms.

De Groote Weiver has been open on Industrieweg in Wormerveer since 2010. De Groote Weiver is an activity center featuring a bar, a café-restaurant, a thrift store, a concert hall, an arthouse cinema, and rental facilities. Although it is not part of the Zaanbocht circuit, we felt it should not be left out of the list of cultural venues in and around the Zaanbocht.

The Great Weiver

On Friday, June 29, 1984, twenty people squatted in the gas plant on Weiver in Krommenie, which had been vacant for a year. The building, named De Groote Weiver [DGW] in homage to De Groote Keyzer in Amsterdam
, would house, among other things, an SOS flea market for the underprivileged, a well-equipped public workshop, and, of course,
living and studio spaces.

Vegetarian meals are served, and benefit events and other gatherings are organized. De Groote Weiver is a socially engaged venue with limited financial resources that is run entirely by volunteers and supported by a single paid staff member.

At Theater De Kaasfabriek, we strive to bring the magic of the stage to life, to make you laugh, cry, reflect, and immerse yourselves in the world of art and culture. We are proud to present a diverse program full of captivating performances,

De Kaasfabriek Theater

Theater de Kaasfabriek in Wormer at Dorpsstraat 206 is a foundation run entirely by volunteers. The board consists of 5 volunteers, a group of volunteer technicians, and a group of volunteer ushers.

The goal of Theater de Kaasfabriek is to offer a diverse program: cabaret, music, theater, children’s shows, and more. There’s something for everyone. We also rent out the venue to amateur theater groups so they can rehearse and perform in a fantastic space at a reduced rate.
